Picking that Just Right book! -We talked a little bit about the five finger rule at curriculum night as a tool to help your child find those "Just Right" books for independent reading. Every time your child gets to a word that they don't know how to read OR don't know the meaning of, they put a finger up.
0-1 unknown words=too Easy
2-3 unknown words=Just Right!
4-5 unknown words=too Challenging
As a quick reminder--Remember that if your child is reading a picture book make sure that they read at least three pages and check their fingers after all three are read. If your child is reading a chapter book, make sure they read at least 1 1/2 pages and then check. This is an important step in helping your child be in that perfect fit book. Happy Reading! :)
Book Boxes A big part of our reader's workshop is independent reading. It is very helpful to students to have a magazine file box available to them during this time to keep their independent reading books in as well as their reader's journal. I will be sending a letter home early in the school year, but just in case you are finishing up your school supply shopping--pick up a plastic or cardboard magazine file box and have your child decorate the box with their name labeled. Thanks!
Reminders: -As we begin the 2009-2010 school year, please remember our school wide schedule change. Our specials start right at 9:00 and our teaching occurs right up until 3:25 in the afternoon. Classroom doors will be open promptly at 8:50 a.m. arriving on time in the morning is very important to our daily routine and to ensure that each child is able to participate in all activities. Because our literacy block ends at 3:25 p.m., students will not begin their pack-up procedures until then.
-Please send a healthy, mess-free, peanut free snack each day with your child.
